How can AI tools help wastewater treatment plant operators in their day-to-day work? Over the past three years, the DARROW project has explored this question by developing and testing AI tools that support wastewater treatment plant operation. To mark the end of our project, we invite you to join us in person or online for the DARROW Final Event: a unique opportunity to explore how AI tools are helping wastewater treatment in practice.
What to expect
On 12 August 2026, we invite plant operators, water authorities, utilities, and innovation professionals to join us online or in-person at Waterschap De Dommel Headquarters in Boxtel for the DARROW Final Event.
We will demonstrate how AI can support wastewater treatment plant operation, ranging from building a reliable data foundation and extracting more value from existing sensor networks to predicting process behaviour and optimising plant performance. We will also explore how advanced tools such as soft sensors, predictive models, reinforcement learning, and hybrid AI approaches can be successfully integrated into operational environments, while keeping operators at the centre of the decision-making process. A preliminary agenda is available below.
Site visit: Tilburg wastewater treatment plant
A highlight of the event (for those attending in-person) is an exclusive visit to the Tilburg wastewater treatment plant, where DARROW solutions have been developed and tested. This is a chance to see firsthand how research translates into real operational environments.
Networking Reception
Following the technical programme and site visit, we invite all attendees to join a networking reception. This informal gathering will provide an opportunity to connect with wastewater professionals, researchers, technology providers, and project partners, while continuing discussions on the opportunities and challenges of AI in wastewater treatment.
